ICANN Registration Data Policy (RDP) – August 21, 2025 Updates
The ICANN Registration Data Policy (RDP) will come into effect on 21 August 2025, replacing the current Interim Registration Data Policy for gTLDs.
Key Changes:
- Transition to THIN Data Model
Some domain extensions will now require a more limited (THIN) set of registration data.
➝ No additional action is required from you. We will continue to collect all contact information (Registrant, Admin, Tech, Billing) as usual; however, only the required data will be sent to the relevant registry.
- Domain Ownership (Organization Field)
• If the Organization field is filled in, that organization will be recognized as the legal owner of the domain.
• If left blank, the individual registrant will be considered the legal owner.
• By default, the Organization field will be redacted in RDDS (WHOIS/RDAP) outputs; however, users may choose to publish this information if they wish.
- WHOIS / RDAP Output Changes
• Following this update, personal contact details of registrants will no longer appear in WHOIS/RDAP outputs.
• Displayed data will be limited to domain name, registrar information, nameservers, registration/expiration dates, and status codes.
• This ensures greater privacy compliance and alignment with GDPR and other data protection regulations.
- Affected Extensions
These changes apply only to ICANN-accredited gTLDs. ccTLDs (e.g., .tr, .de, .uk) are not affected and continue to follow their respective country-specific policies.
Recommended Actions:
No technical action is required on your part. However, we recommend informing your customers about the importance of the Organization field and that personal information will no longer be visible in WHOIS/RDAP outputs.
