What is a TLD?

A TLD, or Top-Level Domain, represents the last part on the right side of a domain name. TLDs, which form the highest layer in the hierarchy of the Domain Name System (DNS), are critical in indicating a website’s purpose, geographic location, or type. For example, in the address www.example.com, the .com part is a TLD. Choosing a TLD in a domain registration forms the foundation of a brand’s digital identity and perception. These TLDs are managed by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and are made available to users through authorized registrars.

What are Top-Level Domains (TLDs)?

TLDs are generally divided into three main categories:

Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs)

These are general-purpose extensions without any specific geographic or usage restrictions. The most well-known examples are .com (commercial), .net (network), .org (organization), and more recent extensions like .info, .biz.

Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs)

These consist of two letters and are assigned to a specific country or region. For example, .tr for Turkey, .de for Germany. These extensions are vital for reaching local audiences and building trust in that region.

Sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLDs)

These are TLDs supported and managed by a specific community or sector. For example, .edu for academic institutions, .gov for government entities.

How to Buy a Top-Level Domain (TLD)?

The process of purchasing a TLD is quite standard and generally includes the following steps:

  1. Choose a Registrar: Check instant prices, reseller levels and integration options via Domain Name API, and evaluate pricing, support and additional features.
  2. Availability Check: Verify whether your desired domain name and TLD combination has already been registered.
  3. Registration and Payment: If the domain is available, choose a registration period (usually 1 to 10 years). Provide required information (WHOIS details) and complete the payment process.
  4. Renewal: To maintain the domain’s usage, renew it regularly at the end of the chosen registration period. Renewal prices may differ from the initial registration price.

New Top-Level Domains

With ICANN’s New gTLD program launched in 2012, thousands of new TLDs have been released. These extensions solved the problem of domain scarcity and offered brands more creative options.

These new TLDs are grouped into categories such as sectoral (e.g., .app, .tech, .shop), geographic (e.g., .istanbul, .paris), or general (e.g., .site, .online, .xyz). They allow brands to find more specific and memorable domain names while increasing their ability to deliver a direct message to their target audience. For example, for a tech startup, a .tech extension can create a much more meaningful identity than simply using .com.

Top-Level Domain List and Prices

Domain pricing varies greatly depending on the type of TLD chosen, its demand in the industry, and registrar policies. Prices are usually considered under three main headings:

Registration Price

The fee for purchasing the domain name for the first time.

Renewal Price

The annual fee paid to extend the registration period of the domain.

Transfer Price

The fee for transferring the domain name from one registrar to another.

For example, while the annual registration fees for standard TLDs such as .com are relatively low, the prices of new or special-purpose TLDs (e.g., .car, .bank) or premium domain names can reach thousands of dollars. Local ccTLDs also have different pricing dynamics due to restrictions and policies of local registration authorities. For up-to-date and accurate prices, you should always check the instant price lists of your registrar.
