Search a domain. Everything you need to know about a domain is right here.
When you register a domain, your contact information is displayed in the public Whois database. This means anyone can view the details of the contact information you entered when registering your domain. The information displayed in the results, called Whois information, includes the domain owner’s contact details as well as technical data such as name servers (DNS) and domain status.
A Whois lookup works like a search engine. When users enter a domain into the Domain Whois Lookup tool and click the “Run Whois” button, information about the domain is fetched from the public Whois database. Whois stores the contact information of anyone who registered a given domain or changed its DNS settings.
You can hide your Whois information by using the “Hide Whois information” button next to the domain in your admin panel. With Whois privacy, your contact information is hidden and replaced with anonymous information. This means your data is protected against identity theft, harassment, and spam.
Whois is a public database that stores registration data for every domain on the internet. As required by ICANN, when a domain is registered, specific contact information must be collected — including the registrant's name, email address, physical address, phone number, and IP address. All of this information is gathered and maintained in a centralized Whois database, queryable by anyone.
💡 Whois is the official directory of domain ownership — think of it as a public phone book for every registered domain name on the internet.
A Whois search does far more than simply confirm whether a domain is registered. It provides a comprehensive snapshot of any domain, including the registrar name, full registration details, current domain status, domain expiration date, and name server configuration. This makes it an essential tool for domain investors, cybersecurity professionals, and businesses researching domain ownership or infrastructure.
💡 Whois reveals not just who owns a domain, but when it expires, which registrar holds it, and what name servers it uses — all in a single query.
A domain search checks whether a specific domain name is currently available for registration — it answers the question "can I buy this domain?". A Whois lookup, on the other hand, retrieves detailed registration records for domains that are already registered — it answers "who owns this domain and what are its technical details?". Both tools serve distinct purposes and work best when used together.
💡 Domain search = availability check. Whois lookup = ownership and technical details for registered domains.
Due to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), personal data can no longer be published publicly in the Whois database. All personal contact information is kept private by default. Domain Name API provides free Whois privacy protection to every customer who purchases a domain — no extra charge, no subscription required. Your data is safe.
💡 Your personal information is masked in Whois results. Full privacy protection is included at no cost with every domain registration.
While some registrars charge separately for Whois privacy as an add-on service, Domain Name API provides free Whois privacy protection to every customer who purchases a domain. There are no hidden fees — your personal information is protected from the moment of registration.
💡 Domain Name API includes Whois privacy at no additional cost. Many other registrars charge for this as an optional add-on — always check before registering.
Using the Whois domain lookup tool via Domain Name API is simple and free. Navigate to the Whois page, enter the domain name you want to look up into the search bar, and click search. Registration details, name server information, expiration date, registrar data, and domain status are returned instantly — no account or login required.
💡 No account needed. Enter any domain name into the search bar on the Whois page and get instant results — completely free.
Yes — ICANN requires all domain registrants to provide accurate and up-to-date contact information at the time of registration and to keep it current. Providing false, incomplete, or outdated details can result in domain ownership being revoked by ICANN. Whois results reflect the official data submitted to and verified by the domain registrar, though personal details are masked under GDPR.
💡 Accuracy is mandatory: ICANN can revoke domain ownership for false Whois information. Always keep your registration details current.
Yes. Whois information can be updated at any time through your domain registrar's control panel or account dashboard. Most domain registrars require annual updates to Whois information and send notification reminders to domain owners as the update deadline approaches. Keeping your Whois data accurate is both a legal requirement and a best practice for domain security.
💡 Update Whois details through your registrar's control panel. Most registrars send annual reminders — keeping your data current protects your domain ownership.
